Wade Burleson shows how much of what passes for organized Christianity today is simply a minor modification of the Old Covenant agreement God had with Israel, an agreement the writer of Hebrews called "obsolete and outdated." The reason many followers of Jesus lack the freedom and joy the New Testament promises is because Christians have little understanding that the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ ended the Old Covenant, and established a RADICALLY NEW agreement between God and sinners. Wade Burleson shows how there can be incredible freedom and abiding joy from resting in God's love for us through Christ's performance and obedience for us. When we focus on God's immeasurable love for us in Christ Jesus, we can avoid finding our satisfaction and happiness in life through measuring how good we are through our religious performance and activity on behalf of God or the institutional church.

Radically New The New Covenant Will Change the Way You Think and Live Wade Burleson Books

Wade Burleson has just finished a new book, entitled "Radically New ... The New Covenant Will Change The Way You Think And Live". I got it on Amazon, and read it last evening and this morning.

Yeah .. I know it's Sunday and folks will say "You should have been in church!!" but I'm coming off a bad cold and a full day of travel, and neither Peg nor I was up to going out this morning.

It's also ironic ... and probably providential ... that I'm writing about Wade's new book under these circumstances. Ever since I've been active in churches, I can recall being admonished about sin, and about "ought to's". What we ought to do and what we ought not to do. About something, almost every week.

Then I read somewhere that John 8:32 promises freedom to those who know the Truth. And, since Jesus said HE is the Truth (and the Way and the Life), I've wondered what we're set free from. Some have said we're free from the eternal consequences of our sin ... free from hell, but frankly that's a promise made to dead Christians. I've wondered what about now? What's the freedom for living Christians?

Rev. Burleson effectively answers that in this book. He proposes that operating as one freed from the Old Covenant ... the one that was offered to Israel through the Mosaic law ... allows one to live free from the "ought to's" that we're always hearing about.

Jesus plainly tells us that the mark of the Christian will be the love we show one for another. And that we're to love our neighbors as ourselves. And that mandates we love ourselves. Plus, He told us we're to love each other as He has loved us! And the language tells us we're to love one another and love our neighbors just as, or to the same degree, as Jesus loved us. And we can't do that unless we love ourselves the way Jesus loves us. Despite our flaws. Despite our failures. Despite our shortcomings.

So bundle up all the actions that "churchy people" have told you over the years .. the things you have to do in order to justify your position as a follower of Jesus ... and leave them on the ash heap from one of those burnt offerings of the past. And exercise your privilege of loving people the way Jesus loves you, and the way He has in mind for us to love others.

It's called abundant life, and it's one of the 2 reasons Jesus, Himself, gave for coming to earth.

I haven't tried to go through and address each point Wade makes in Radically New..", for to do so would require I write his whole book here. But, trust me, he makes a very effective case for moving from the old, works-oriented, action dependant working out of our salvation, to loving ourselves as Jesus loves us, and passing that love along to one another and to the world.

If there are any of the commandments in the Old Covenant ... including what we refer to as the "Ten Commandments" ... that nag at you, then you need to get, and read, this book. Once you see how Wade has woven scripture together to substantiate each point, The book will live up to its title, and up to its sub-title.

Radically.

Radically New The New Covenant Will Change the Way You Think and Live Wade Burleson Books Reviews

The idea of loving without receiving sounds so great. But I have tried for 40 years to put it into practice, and the result has left me exhausted and disillusioned. I grew up in an abusive home and married a Christian man with autism and antisocial personality disorder. Just as this book advises I have continually been told to love without expecting anything. I don't mean to be selfish, but I wish I could have a relationship with reciprocal love even if it was just for a week.
If you have ever listened to Wade Burleson or read any of his books, you will know that you are going to get a 5 star experience. After reading this book you will experience a FREEDOM in knowing Jesus Christ and have a historical understanding of God's covenant to man. You will walk away feeling closer to God and having an incredible understanding of his plan for our lives. Thanks again Mr. Burleson for a great piece of work.
reassuring, brilliant, transforming, worth many many re-reads
Having been a member of Wade's church for the past couple of years, I can honestly say that this book is a sincere reflection of him as a pastor. His pen is as encouraging and convicting as his preaching. His dedication to Truth is wholly evident in his unwillingness to avoid controversy. His come-as-you-are approach to writing, preaching, and church leadership is a refreshing change from the believe-what-I-believe approach of some other evangelical preachers. This grace and style are because of his unyielding faith in the radical new-ness of the New Covenant based in Christ.

Radically New is an encouraging, convicting, and edifying read.
Pastor Burleson's book, Radically New should be read by all who claim to be New Covenant believers. We know that we are living in New Covenant times, but our thought patterns betray our Old Covenant understanding of God. The New Covenant is not a better version of the Old Covenant, it is radically different at its core, the person of God. I have a good understanding of the new covenant, but this book has challenged me to put that understanding into practice in my daily life. Some of the chapters were uncomfortable for me to read because they betrayed the fact that my living does not really reflect the way I speak. Do I really trust in Christ's righteousness "alone",or do I fall back into the mud of shame, in the hope that if I feel bad enough about myself, "I" will be able to change my behavior. Pastor Wade points out that this is bondage to something that has no power. And the real shocker is that self effort is not of faith and that of course is sin. Wow! This is an important book for every church member. It is a call to be what we are, forgiven, loved, and at rest. Thank you Pastor for reminding me that the true gospel is Jesus plus nothing!
The deep intimate insights Wade Burleson has written in this book will keep your gaze focused on Jesus Christ. Wade states,
"I want to continue to be captivated by the love and grace of God in Christ. Christ is the ONLY ONE that can bring me true life, liberty and happiness". AMEN!!! In every chapter Wade points you to Jesus.
Jesus says in Matthew 11 28-30, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
The teachings in this book will help you to finally drop the heavy and burdensome yoke of the Old Covenant, works oriented Christianity and human religious expectations and instruct you how to finally REST in Jesus.
