The Hawk A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345518248 Books

Where Tor was the ultimate alpha, strong and seemingly invincible, a leader of all men and a sucker for his clingy wife, Hawk is seemingly the ultimate golden boy. He has great looks, abundant charm, jovial personality, ready wit and a seafaring talent to make one swoon! Seriously ladies, this one's a keeper. No wonder everyone flocks to him, men as well as women. He is confident to the point of arrogant at times, like when he was contemplating proposing marriage to a nursemaid, but it strikes more as funny than annoying. Yep, he's that likable. Ellie, the heroine, wants to stay away from him for these very reasons. What a loony bird, right? But she has her reasons, of course, and they are quite valid. She is bossy, the result of caring for children, no doubt. She is also very plain looking with a very unremarkable figure, enough to the point of being forgettable to some and un-rape-worthy to others. But it's always nice when the heroine is not so beautiful as to make men weep! But there's this little thing: what does our golden boy see in her? Hanging around a plain looking contrary female might have been amusing for sometime, and it was. But that forever kind of love? Intense lust? Hawk sure has funny tastes. But the writing is so good, their interactions so entertaining, and Hawk so cool that you just ignore this niggling annoyance and move on. I would've loved to see more of Matty and Ralph. But Hawk's sea-escapades more than make up for it. For being a plain Jane with an unpleasant attitude, Ellie sure has handsome men lining up to wed her! Some heroines have all the luck. Heck, they all do! But I like Ellie much more than Christina, who expected Tor to fall in love with her and divulge all his secrets within a week of marriage! You will love Hawk, I'm sure, even when he's being a brat. And don't forget to read the afterword.

The Hawk A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345518248 Books Reviews

This is the second time I've read this book. I wanted to reread it since I am reading the whole series now. The first go around a couple of years ago, I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. This go around I give it 4 stars. Not sure why. It just didn't hold my attention as well as I remembered. And it took FOREVER for the hero to realize he was in love with the heroine. I was thinking, WTF? C'mon! Really?

And the story this go around was sooooo slow. I had to even put the book down a couple of days and then get back 'into' it again. But with all that said, the plot is great. Monica McCarty knows how to tell a story. There's plenty of action, lots of Highlanders, and then there are the main characters who *finally* fall in love. The secondary characters were pretty good as well.

I'm on to the next in the series. I love any book with William Wallace in it. Not to mention, the next books cover is swoon worthy. YUM.
The second book in the series and it is another great one. I have definitely found a new author I like. Do not know why some people ragged on the story because Ellie was plain. Yes she was plain, but the more time Hawk/Erik spent with her the more he found her beautiful. Yes the couples are usually more even, but there is nothing stating they have to be. I kind of liked it that the she wasn't. I get sick of both of them being so perfect. I like it when they are not. Some authors do this by making the woman bigger, or the man scarred. People also complained that she mentioned all the time that she was plain, but they did not complain about her mentioning how nice he looked all the time. What's up with that? Anyway because he was the way he was, and he could have any woman, Ellie didn't figure he would ever like her or be serious about her since she was plain. Being plain does not mean she was ugly either. She had the personality he needed. Someone that didn't fall all over him and believe everything he said, and someone that was interested in him, and took the time to get to know him. She challenged him and didn't throw herself at him like the others. I liked it that Hawk, who never really let anything get to him, becomes grumpy at times over this relationship. Hawk was nice looking and charming and all the women threw themselves at him. He is a great leader, loyal, and honorable. He tells her from the beginning he will never be serious about anyone. He loves women too much. Even when they start to fool around he still lets her know it is only passion for passions sake. He uses the fact that she is not his usual type to help convince himself he doesn't have feeling for her. He, like Tor with Christina in "The Chief" will not admit that he loves her, and does not want her involved in what is going on as she could end up being killed or tortured for information by King Edward or his men. He does not want to keep her around as he is afraid for her. Even when he realizes he loves her he tells her doesn't because of this. So I am not sure why people were upset about him hurting her either. He was trying to do what he sees is the right thing, by letting her marry someone else so she will not get hurt or end up dead. Hawk was another great hero. The Ranger is next.

Sexual content is medium.
I enjoy reading these, but it makes me feel guilty. I do enjoy the characters although they are much of a muchness. The worst thing is the non-existent proofreading/editing. So distracting when words are missing, or in the wrong tense, or misspelled...it goes on and on. Not to mention the anachronisms. No one in the 13th century would say "Okay". Not being nit picky, but I would enjoy it so much more without these things, which bring the reader right out of the story.
